The Ontario government has launched a province-wide immigration strategy to attract skilled workers and assist newcomers in settling into their new home.
The strategy has three goals: to attract skilled workers to Ontario and grow a stronger economy, help newcomers and their families achieve success, and leverage the global connections of Ontario’s diverse communities.
A provincial news release suggested that without continued immigration, Ontario’s working-age population will begin to decline by 2014, while newcomers make up 30 per cent of Ontario’s labour force.
Part of the goal is to raise the proportion of economic immigrants to 70 per cent from the current level of 52 per cent.
The immigration strategy was developed out of recommendations made by the Expert Roundtable on Immigration, which was established in March 2012.
