Throughout the month of June, the province is increasing its inspections at surface diamond drill operations in the North.
Inspectors will be checking to ensure employers are complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act; protected from on-site hazards such as exposed drill parts; using proper safety measures, equipment and procedures to prevent injuries; and properly trained and supervised on jobs.
Common injuries include entanglement in rotating equipment, entanglement of clothing, a spark igniting leaking hydraulic fluid, and tripping and falling.
According to Workplace Safety North statistics, the number of workers engaged in surface diamond drilling in Ontario has increased by 64 per cent since 2009, increasing from 803 workers to 1,320 workers.
The safety blitz is part of the province's Safe at Work Strategy.
