Porter Airlines founder Robert Deluce has been given a CEO Award of Excellence from the Canadian Public Relations Society of Toronto at their annual gala, Jan. 19.

The award is given to Toronto area CEO's who demonstrate personal excellence in the understanding and implementation of public relations practices.

In a news release, CEO award chair Lawrence Stevenson said Porter Airlines “has proven to be one of the great Canadian success stories, in large part due to the communication expertise of their leader, Robert Deluce.”

Stevenson said Deluce has created a company vision with “effective and ethical communications with various stakeholders.”

Deluce, who comes from a famous Northern Ontario aviation family, started the business class airline in 2006 flying out of Toronto's island airport – now called Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport.

The airline flies to cities in eastern Canada and the U.S., and added Thunder Bay last year as a destination. Deluce told a Toronto newspaper he will unveil a five-year business plan this year which he expects will show significant growth over several years.

Past award winners have been Loblaws executive chairman Galen Weston, United Way of Greater Toronto president Frances Lankin and the late Richard Bradshaw, general director of the Canadian Opera Company.
