Porter Airlines made its inaugural flight to Sault Ste. Marie, May 4.
The upstart business class air carrier offers two daily round trips between the Sault Ste. Marie Airport and Billy Bishop Airport in downtown Toronto.
“Northern Ontario is an important region for Porter to serve and offer competition in,” said president and CEO Robert Deluce in a release. “This expansion adds to a growing Porter network of cities.”
Sault Mayor Debbie Amaroso said Porter's arrival means the Sault has “access to a first class air service which will make travelling to and from Sault Ste. Marie an elite experience.”
Passenger terminal improvements are being made to accommodate the new carrier.
Toronto-based Porter flies 70-seat Bombardier Q400 aircraft with flights to Ottawa, Montreal, Thunder Bay, Windsor, Halifax, Boston, Chicago and New York.
