Phone service to expand in Elliot Lake

A funding grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC) will allow the expansion of a wireless communications network north of Elliot Lake along Highway 108.

A funding grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC) will allow the expansion of a wireless communications network north of Elliot Lake along Highway 108.

The NOHFC is providing $415,150 towards the installation of communications towers at the firetower lookout and the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre, along with a repeater on Quirke Lake and two repeaters at Dunlop Lake.

Additional funding for the $1-million project is coming from Industry Canada ($450,000) and the city ($150,000). Planning to expand the network has been underway for the last five years.

The expanded service would serve the cottage lots developed by Elliot Lake Retirement Living, providing them with telephone and high-speed Internet access, which has previously been unavailable.

The city was initially denied a request for funding from the NOHFC earlier this year, but was successful after appealing the ruling.
