The Sault Ste. Marie Airport has shattered records in 2012, posting new highs for both passenger and aircraft traffic.

Passenger traffic reached an historical record since the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corp. took over ownership in 1998. A total of 187,884 people passed through the airport, which marks a 53.7 per cent increase from 1998 numbers. The corporation credited the introduction of additional domestic and seasonal airlines to the rise.

Aircraft traffic increased by 37.6 per cent, an increase attributed to additional airline movements from tenant airlines, a boost in maintenance work performed by JD Aero and the work of flight schools at the airport.

The corporation is currently drafting a five-year strategic plan to outline future goals for the airport, with a focus on operating and capital expenditures, as well as investment and business development opportunities.

The plan will be posted on the corporation’s website upon completion.
