Construction has officially begun on Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) $2.6-billion Lower Mattagami Project, the largest hydroelectric generating construction project in Northern Ontario in 40 years.
The move will add 440 megawatts (MW) through the expansion of four existing hydroelectric stations, including the rebuilding of Smoky Falls Generating Station, as well as the addition of new generating units at the Harmon, Kipling and Little Long stations.
Design and construction of the project has been awarded to Kiewit Alarie Partnership (KAP), made up of two of Canada's largest construction firms. This includes Timmins' Leo Alarie and Sons Construction Ltd., a subsidiary of the Aecon Infrastructure Group, as well as Peter Kiewit & Sons Co., which has offices in Milton.
Roughly 600 people will work on the project every year through the five-year construction phase.
The Moose Cree First Nation is also partnering with OPG on the project, and will have up to a 25 per cent equity share.
