The province's mining industry is steadily improving its safety record.

The Ontario Mining Association reports the industry's 2010 lost-time injury rate shows an improvement of 17 per cent over 2009. The most significant reduction was severity of incidents. In 2010, lost work days per incident were 12, compared with 74 days in 2009, an 84 per cent improvement.

The association says mining safety statistics are improving because of personal diligence and concern for one's colleagues. A number of initiatives and institutions continue to support safe practices in mining. In 2009, mining was the second safest industry in Ontario behind education.
