Ontario offers tools to employers to comply with new workplace safety rules

The province of Ontario is offering up a tool kit and guide to help employers comply with impending changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The province of Ontario is offering up a tool kit and guide to help employers comply with impending changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

As of June 15, 2010, employers will be required to assess the risks of workplace violence and harassment, and implement policies and programs to address them. To assist with this transition, the province has released documentation, assessments and surveys on the Ministry of Labour website, www.labour.gov.on.ca, for employers to use in consultation with workers, supervisors, joint health and safety committees, as well as unions.

The following activities or conditions are considered to be at higher risk: having direct contact with clients, handling cash, working alone or in small numbers, working with unstable or volatile people, working in a community-based setting, mobile workplaces, working in high-crime areas, securing or protecting valuable goods, and transporting people and/or goods.
