The remote northern community of Marten Falls First Nation is studying how to connect with the provincial highway system.

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund has invested $50,000 to examine how the fly-in community can reduce its transportation costs and attract new business.

A winter road leading into Marten Falls is open only for one month each year. The rest of the year the community is accessible only by plane.

"With unusually mild winters that have cut short the winter road season in recent years, our government supports communities that are reassessing their winter road corridors," said Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry in an April 29 statement.

The winter road connects the community to year-round logging roads that run from the Ogoki Sustainable Forest Licence area south of Nakina on Highway 584.
