Northwestern chiefs want consultation on dams

The Anishinaabe Treaty 3 First Nations are asking for a judicial review through the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to stop the sale of AbitibiBowater's hydroelectric dams in northwestern Ontario.

The Anishinaabe Treaty 3 First Nations are asking for a judicial review through the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to stop the sale of AbitibiBowater's hydroelectric dams in northwestern Ontario.

The chiefs are singling out the Calm Lake, Sturgeon Falls, Fort Frances, Kenora and Norman generating stations.

Earlier this year, the Ontario Power Authority approved the AbitibiBowater sale of the dams to ACH Limited Partnership.

The Grand Council and chiefs say the Ontario government failed to consult and accommodate with them before the dams were sold. The chiefs say the transaction could have harmful impacts on their traditional way of life in wild rice harvesting, fishing and trapping within the Lake of the Woods and Rainy Lake watersheds.
