A Northern Ontario student has received special mention at the So You Think You Know Mining video creation contest.
Leah Gosselin from Ecole Secondaire Catholique Theriault in Timmins shared the Best Runner-Up prize with Ray Xue from Don Mills C.I. in Toronto for their production, Tomorrow.
The awards ceremony was held at the Royal Ontario Museum on June 1. Daniela Carlino from Lake Superior High School in Terrace Bay, who produced Career Day in Mining, was on hand to put together a video of the awards ceremony for the OMA website.
Sponsored by the Ontario Mining Association, the third annual video creation competition challenged students across the province to create a two- to three-minute video clip that demonstrates the benefits of mining to society.
Taking home first place and $5,000 was Amanda Ceniti from Georgetown District High School for Mining: A Musical. Best Original Screenplay went to Jean Vanier Catholic High School student Josiah Scott for Without Mining.
Max Parr of Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto, who last year won Best Director, won Best Original Score for Mine(d) Your Business. Meaghan Butler from South London C.I. earned the Best Director nod, while Md.Rayun Mehrab from Danforth Tech in Toronto earned a nod for the best video in a language other than English for his Bengali production of The Mining Prospectors.
Highschool Minebacker earned Mitch Langdon from Woodstock C.I. a win in the Best Comedy category, and Quentin Hall from H.B. Beal Secondary in London won the Best Animation prize for Mining Man and the Power of Mining.
The Best Overall winner takes home $5,000, while top winners in other major categories receive $2,500 each. The top winner's school will receive $500 worth of video equipment in recognition of the student achievement.
In total, the OMA handed out $28,500 in prize money.
