Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Stan Beardy has declared a state of emergency for winter road communities due to the shorter season. It has created "extreme shortfalls" of necessary supplies, Beardy said.
The winter road network is relied upon by 29 NAN communities for the transportation of essential goods, such as fuel and construction supplies through the winter months.
The warmer season led to the road being open for only three weeks.
This will force communities to pay for aircraft to deliver goods – a financial burden these communities cannot afford to bear, said Beardy in a release.
Beardy and other NAN leadership figures are calling on Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to provide emergency funds to cover the cost of these air deliveries to the affected communities.
