Nipissing University has struck a deal with Apple Canada to provide laptop computers to its Education students.
Next fall, Bachelor of Education students will be using Apple MacBook computers in the faculty's groundbreaking iTeach Laptop Learning Program. Students can choose between eight laptop models that best meet their individual needs and budget. They will lease an external hard drive from the university which contains Ministry of Education-licensed software to their use as teacher candidates.
Nipissing will also be first Canadian teaching university to employ the Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
Apple Canada is providing all the training and certification to staff and the university's help desk will become an authorized Apple service centre.
"Nipissing is a leader in education and in the use of educational technology in the classroom," said education dean Ron Wideman in an April 3 statement. "With the introduction of MacBooks, our students have a tremendous opportunity to gain expertise on the two dominate operating systems and related educational software, giving them a significant advantage in the employment market."
