The Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre has opened a new exhibit that spotlights this northwestern Ontario's community's aviation history.
The centre has unveiled a new HD video of the impact of the Norseman floatplane with technical and historic contributions from Sudbury's Science North and the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.
The project was made possible with $500,000 of combined federal and provincial government stimulus funding provided last year along with money from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.
“We are thrilled that all of those interesting stories about Red Lake's unique history have been brought to life in such a compelling way,” said the centre's director Michelle Alderton in a release who praised Science North for oversaw the project's development and installation.
The HD film production features colourful vignettes by local personalities in weaving together the history of Red Lake through aviation, prospecting, mining, immigration and First Nations.
The three centres are collaborating in another new visitor attraction at each venue focusing on the science of forest fires and advancements made in aviation over the years to battle them.
