The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) is spending $2.4 million to buy new or make upgrades to trail grooming equipment.
The money, derived from permit sales, is earmarked for 22 capital equipment projects.
The money is on top of $4.1 million in federal funding announced as part of Canada's Economic Action Plan for trail infrastructure improvements.
The group said snowmobile trails generate $1.2 billion in economic activity in Ontario each winter.
A new groomer unit costs between $190,000 and $225,000 depending on the make and options.
“Our goal is to get as many of these units on the snow as possible this winter, while the rest will be available for the 2011 season,” said OFSC trails program manager Mike Farr in a Jan. 4th release. “Snowmobilers should be pleased to see their permit dollars at work in this very tangible way.”
