A new First Nations transmission company is meeting with companies to discuss the possibility of building projects on treaty lands in northeastern Ontario.
At the inaugural Feb. 8 meeting of the Lake Huron Anishinabek Transmission Company, held in Serpent River, two meetings were held with licensed Ontario electricity transmitters to discuss how all parties want to work to build new transmission within the Lake Huron Treaty territory.
Serpent River Chief Isadore Day, a company director, said there remains unresolved political issues related to the consultation and accommodation of First Nation constitutional Aboriginal and treaty rights.
“This must be done before we can agree to any new transmission and generation project developments in our treaty territory.”
Company CEO John Beaucage, who attended the proceedings, was encouraged by what he saw and the information the companies were able to share.
Beaucage said the company's formation sends a message to regulators, the business community and potential partners that the Lake Huron Chiefs are “able to conduct business on a corporation-to-corporation basis.”
