After more than a month of negotiations between Xstrata Nickel and the United Steelworkers Local 2020, progress at the bargaining table for a new collective agreement has been "incredibly slow," according to union officials.

The 215 office, clerical and technical workers represented by the union were updated on the status of negotiations at a member meeting held at Sudbury's Quality Inn on Feb. 25.

Prior to the meeting, Gerry Loranger, area coordinator for the United Steelworkers, said in a release that although he holds out hope a new agreement can be reached, "I am not very confident, however, that the members will be pleased with where we are in negotiations."

The collective agreement for the 215 members expires at midnight on Feb. 28, 2010.
