An annual week long celebration of mining activity in Sudbury has been rebranded to better reflect changes in the industry.

Formerly known as Sudbury Mining Week, the event has been renamed Modern Mining & Technology Sudbury. Over the course of a week, students from around the city participate in a range of activities, including a career fair, mining-themed games and a photo competition. The focus is promoting the mining sector to students as an exciting and prosperous career choice.

"Increasingly we have been hearing from students that when they think of mining they think of underground tunnels and of rocks and drills, and that's about it," organizing committee chair Nicole Tardif said in a news release. "In fact, the reality is that exploration and mining technology have evolved tremendously in the past few decades and Greater Sudbury has truly become an international centre for mining innovation excellence. So, we knew we needed a brand that better reflected the industry if we were going to interest and inform young people about a future in this sector."

Although one week will annually be dedicated to mining, the committee will additionally aim to promote the industry throughout the year.

Over the next few months, the committee will unveil a new website and logo, along with social media platforms.
