Women need not be afraid to enter politics, Greater Sudbury Mayor Marianne Matichuk told an audience at the Radisson Hotel on Jan. 18.
The mayor was speaking at the first 2011 meeting of the Business and Professional Women's (BPW) Club, where she shared stories from her life and some lessons she learned that she said helped prepare her for the mayor's job.
"We need more women (in politics)," she said. "Don't be afraid. Just be yourself. If you think you can do something, and you think that you'd make a difference, then I think just go for it."
Matichuk said success in politics doesn't come without having a network of support.
“I'm here to make our city successful,” she said. “And you're part of our city so it's important that you're successful within yourself.”
Matichuk was elected Greater Sudbury's first woman mayor on Oct. 25, 2010.
