The Young-Davidson mine has started pre-production development at its open pit in Matachewan in northeastern Ontario.

AuRico Gold announced Nov. 18 that the first open pit blast has occurred and commissioning of the mine project remains on schedule. The first gold pour is slated for the end of March 2012.

The Toronto miner said the open pit will establish a three-year ore stockpile of between 500,000 and 750,000 tonnes, ahead of the mill commissioning and prior to the underground ramping up for production by late 2013 or early 2014.

“We are excited to have reached this significant milestone, bringing Young-Davidson closer to production,” said Peter MacPhail, COO for Canada and Australia.

Young-Davidson has proven and probably gold reserves of 2.7 million ounces.
