The province is moving forward on $7.2-million in repairs to the historic Little Current Swing Bridge, which connects the Manitoulin Island to the mainland on Highway 6.

The contract was awarded to Bolton, Ontario-based Concreate USL Ltd., beginning in early January with a completion date for summer 2010.

The bridge's deck will be replaced, and its piers and abutments will also be rehabilitated.

Built in 1913 for rail, the bridge now exclusively handles automotive traffic and is a designated historic site. It will be closed to traffic from 11 p.m .to 5 a.m. through the construction period, with brief re-opening at 2 a.m. to allowed queued traffic to pass.
