Liberals used to denounce privatizing Crown assets, says NDP

The McGuinty government's consideration of selling off Hydro One, Ontario Power Generation, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario has the provincial NDP hanging them with the Liberal's own words from the Legislature.

A Dec. 16 NDP news release contains Hansard quotes from 2002 and 2003 from then-Opposition leader Dalton McGuinty and Liberal critics Gerry Phillips, Jim Bradley and John Wilkinson attacking the Conservative Harris and Eves governments on their “fire sale” plans to sell Highway 407 and other public assets.

The NDP release said selling off Crown assets was a policy “that the McGuinty government used to denounce.”

The McGuinty government recently hired two banks, CIBC World Markets Inc. and Goldman Sachs Groups Inc. to look into the sale of some Crown corporations to raise cash to tackle a nearly $24.7 billion deficit.
