The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) is streamlining the LEED Canada certification process to make it faster, with the goal of reducing the process to less than six months.
Demand for LEED certification has created a backlog of projects waiting for approval. The coming changes are designed to deal with the backlog and speed up the application process.
“We listened to the industry and have taken action. We've created an implementation plan that should shorten the certification process to an average of less than six months,” Thomas Mueller, president and CEO of CaGBC, said in a news release. “The demand for LEED is a positive sign of where the green building industry is going in Canada. It's the CaGBC's responsibility to support and better serve the market.”
To date, the organization has increased internal staff to address backlogged projects, delayed Credit Interpretation Requests, and hired four new review teams to work to certify projects.
Additional changes, recommended by a taskforce formed last summer to examine the issue, will be implemented over the next year.
Changes include shortening the three-stage certification process to two stages for LEED Canada NC 1.0 and LEED Canada CS 1.0 projects; investing in more sophisticated technology to improve the administration of certification; and introducing a design review process.
