Laurentian University has appointed long-time faculty member Dr. Patrice Sawyer as the school's vice-president, research and graduate studies.
Sawyer is a professor with the department of mathematics and computer science, and has served as department chair and dean of science and engineering.
For the last eight year, Sawyer has acted as Laurentian's representative of the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). He has also served as member of many research-oriented boards of directors, including that of the Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO), the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) Institute, and the Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network (SHARCNET).

The school's admissions are up 11 per cent this year, with French-language undergraduate admissions up 26 per cent and international student admissions up 40 per cent.
