Laurentian University's Next 50 Campaign has received a double shot in the arm thanks to two separate $1-million donations from two companies with roots in Sudbury.

Funding from FNX Mining Company, which has mining operations in the Sudbury Basin, is being earmarked for mining programs, while Power Corporation of Canada's donation is set aside for graduate fellowships.

"Laurentian is the go-to resource for research and employees for companies like FNX," said Terry MacGibbon, chairman and CEO of FNX, in a release.

"This gift ensures Laurentian will be able to continue its tradition of training geologists and engineers with the knowledge and skills to hit the ground running when they enter the workforce."

Laurentian's campaign seeks to raise $50 million to help fund central components of the school's strategic plan, including new construction, enhanced research and expanded programs.

This new pair of donations brings the campaign's total to $32 million.
