Laurentian University's many research projects and their local impact were on display the week of Feb. 22 as the Sudbury-based post-secondary school kicked off yet another annual Research Week.

This includes efforts to grow biofuel canola on mine tailings, while another project examines using smelter emissions to grow microalgae, which also would be used for biofuel feedstock or health sector biochemicals.

Future research potential is also represented by the Vale Inco Living With Lakes Centre, currently under construction on the shores of nearby Ramsey Lake. It will be the new home of the school's Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit.

According to the most recent data from Research Infosource, Laurentian ranks sixth among Canadian universities in terms of research growth. This marks the sixth year Laurentian has been ranked among the top 35 universities in Canada in terms of research activity.
