Laurentian University is drawing the attention of a significant number of high school students targeting the Sudbury based post secondary institutional as their first-choice for 2010-11 school year, according to data released by the Ontario Universities Applications Centre.
Although overall applications are only up 2.7 across the province, Laurentian has seen a 14 per cent increase in the number of students who identified it as their first choice on their post-secondary application forms.
The school has already received 700 more applications for the upcoming academic year as compared to the same time the previous year. Officials credit the increase to more aggressive marketing efforts, a record number of visits with high schools, and increased coverage in the national media.
Laurentian, which ranks sixth this year in research growth among Canadian universities, admitted 11 per cent more students for the 2009-2010 year than the previous year.
