Industry group fires last shot at provincial forestry bill

The bitterness over the looming passage of new provincial forest tenure legislation still lingers.

The Ontario Forest Industries Association (OFIA) said the McGuinty government has turned a “deaf ear” to the call from concerned stakeholders to slow down passage of Bill 151, an act to reform the forest tenure system in Ontario.

OFIA wasn't pleased with a time allocation motion to fast track the bill through a standing committee prior to third, and final, reading.

In an April 26 release, OFIA president Jamie Lim accused the McGuinty government of giving the “cold shoulder” to stakeholders in opposition. “It is very clear that the government is not interested in anyone's opinions that differ from its own.”

The group said the government does not have the support of the forest industry and that amendments made to the bill, “fall short of expectations.”
