On May 13, the province announced NetCentral, the organization tasked with improving high-speed telecomunications in the North, would receive $945,150 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.’s emerging technology program. The funding is designed to help connect people, and allow businesses to be competitive.

The province announced it would also be providing the Moose Cree First Nation with $590,000, through the NOHFC's Infrastructure and Community Development Program, to construct a new winter road.

A 17-kilometre winter access road will be constructed between Moose Factory and Otter Rapids next winter to help residents travel and have access to goods more easily along the James Bay coastline.

“In Northern Ontario, creating opportunities for community development starts with modern infrastructure,” Northern Development Minister Michael Gravelle said in a news release. “This will help northerners with better access to goods in the winter, and help them and businesses connect with the rest of the world.”

The modernization of transportation and information infrastrucutre were identified as priorities in the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario on March 4.
