Despite the troubling economic signs analysts have been forecasting during the last year, Ontario housing starts increased slightly in December 2009.
Starts went from from 2008's December total of 52,600 to 54,100 this year, according to seasonally adjusted rates from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
This increases the provincial rate by 2.9 per cent.
Canadian housing starts reached 174,500 units in December, increasing from 164,800 units in November. The national seasonally adjusted annual rate of urban starts increased by 6.6 per cent to 157,100 units. Urban multiple starts increased from 72,800 units in November to 77,700 units in December.
Single urban starts increased by 6.4 per cent to 79,400 units.
Rural Canadian starts were estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 17,400 units in December.
