Housing starts in Sudbury above average in Q1

The housing construction market has begun to rebound in Sudbury, with the best first quarter for single-detached housing starts since 1997, according to the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

The housing construction market has begun to rebound in Sudbury, with the best first quarter for single-detached housing starts since 1997, according to the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

The city saw 20 such starts in March, with another 10 spread across the previous two months, bringing the first-quarter total to 30.

This up from the same period the previous year, which saw eight starts. When the eight apartment starts from first-quarter 2009 is factored in, total preliminary starts for first-quarter 2010 are nearly double that of the previous year.

"Building activity got off to a strong start in the first quarter," said Warren Philp, CMHC's Northern Ontario market analyst, in a release.

"Milder than normal weather in March undoubtedly has contributed to the quick start to housing starts."

North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie have both seen increased starts from the previous year, with 19 and 16, respectively, which also mark these cities' best first quarter since 1997.

Timmins, however, has yet to see its first start.
