The Canadian Adult Recreation Hockey Association (CARHA) Hockey World Cup had a $13.3-million impact on Sault Ste. Marie when the tournament came to the city last March.
The week-long event attracted more than 2,300 visitors from around the world, who took in attractions such as the Agawa Canyon Snow Train and the Canadian BushplaneHeritage Centre.
“Even though we’re a relatively small community, we have unique tourism offerings, which bolstered the 2012 World Cup and helped attract people from all over Canada, the U.S. and Europe,” said Ian McMillan, executive director of Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, in a news release. “Our attractions, coupled with packed restaurants and hotels, spread the visitors throughout the community, thereby maximizing their spending.”
The data, compiled by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA), takes into account visitor spending and the indirect fiscal activity generated by it.
