A $5.5-million investment in information and communication technology infrastructure in the Timiskaming and Gogama-Foleyet region is providing 18 communities with high-speed Internet.

The project was overseen by the Northeastern Ontario Communications Network (NEOnet) and Ontera with funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) and FedNor.

As a result, Ontera, the telecommunications division of Ontario Northland, has serviced the following communities with high-speed service since the end of February: Town of Latchford, North Milne, Temagami North, Goodfish Lake, Hough Lake, Chamberlain Township, Coleman Township, King Kirkland, Gauthier Township, Gowganda, Nettie Lake, Foleyet, Chaput Hughes, Gogama, Sesekinika, Kenogami, Westree, and Shining Tree.

Over two years, Ontera established a wireless broadband network which is connected to its existing fibre-optic back-haul network at Timmins, Kirkland Lake, Englehart, New Liskeard and Temagami.
