Dr. Tammy Eger of Laurentian University’s school of human kinetics has been named the recipient of the university’s 2012-2013 Research Excellence Award.

“Success in research is measured in many ways, and Tammy has excelled in each of them,” said Dr. Patrice Sawyer, vice-president for francophone affairs, research and graduate studies, in a news release. “Her work contributes to national recognition for Laurentian; it is relevant to the community and to the lives of workers in this region and beyond.”

Eger heads up the university’s Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health (CROSH), which is conducting research into occupational health and safety issues that are relevant to Northern Ontario in industries such as mining, natural resources (forestry, pulp and paper), steel and health care.

In January, CROSH announced it was instating a research chair in occupational health and safety, who will be responsible for directing research aimed at establishing the centre as a national and international trendsetter in occupational health and safety research, development, education, training and global best practices.

The Research Excellence Award Committee bestows the award when there is evidence of “outstanding performance” by a faculty member. It is marked with a stipend of $15,000, which can be paid as a sabbatical research grant.
