Construction has begun on a new French Catholic School in Sault Ste. Marie.

The new École Notre-Dame-du-Sault will merge three existing schools and will offer programming from junior kindergarten to grade 12. The project involves building a 36,000-square foot annex onto an existing school on North Street, which will undergo a complete renovation.

The $7.5-million building will open its doors to students in September 2011 and will have a capacity of 565.

The school will have a double gymnasium, library, science and computer labs, support centre and kitchen. Green features include a solar photovoltaic heating system, high-efficiency heating system and a full heat recovery ventilation system.
