Grain leads the way through Port of Thunder Bay

Grain led the way in boosting cargo figures through the Port of Thunder Bay in August. The Thunder Bay Port Authority reported 692,862 tonnes of grain in the month, compared to 458,033 during the same period last year.

The Thunder Bay Port Authority reported 692,862 tonnes of grain in the month, compared to 458,033 during the same period last year.

So far this year, grain movements are up by more than 200,000 tonnes with a cumulative total by Aug. 31 at 3.35 million tonnes.

Coal tonnage dipped during the month (69,501 for 2011 compared to 83,886 in 2010), liquid bulk was down (13,793 in 2011 compared to 21,973 in 2010) and potash dropped dramatically with only 13,693 tonnes moved through the port compared to 41,297 during August of last year.

Cumulative cargo numbers are up at more than 4 million tonnes passing through the port compared to 3.9 million in 2010.
