Get a trade, build the North

The Construction Sector Council (CSC) is predicting that big industrial and utility projects in Ontario will drive construction employment to “near record highs” in the next few years.

The Construction Sector Council (CSC) is predicting that big industrial and utility projects in Ontario will drive construction employment to “near record highs” in the next few years.

In a recently released forecast, the national industry organization said both residential and non-residential construction activity will track upwards with a slate of proposed industrial, commercial, institutional, mining and utilities projects on the books.

The CSC said an estimated workforce of 60,000 is expected to fill the skilled trade ranks over the next nine years but the industry still faces a shortfall of almost 100,000 workers to compensate for the loss of 73,000 through retirement.

The organization cites new mines in Northern Ontario, public transit expansion in the Toronto area and central Ontario, provincial investment in the energy sector and nuclear plants, and building related to the 2015 Pan American games as driving the building market between 2011-2019.
