December freeze-up means the opening of the Far North winter roads network.
The Ontario government has earmarked $4.5 million for the 2010-2011 winter road season to seasonally connect 31 First Nation communities to provincial highways and railways. There are more than 3,000 kilometres of winter roads over ground and frozen waterways that are used to ferry supplies to these communities.
The roads network is usually in place until spring thaw in mid-March. Thirty First Nation organizations and the Town of Moosonee build and operate the roads.
The province has invested $26.2 millon in the Winter Roads Program since October 2003.
