FONOM OK's cabinet posts

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) said it looks forward to working with the new provincial cabinet.

The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) said it looks forward to working with the new provincial cabinet.

“Of key importance to FONOM and its member municipalities is the appointment of Rick Bartolucci as Minister of Northern Development and Mines,” said FONOM President Al Spacek. “Mr. Bartolucci has previously held this portfolio and it is our past experience that he is a very responsive and hardworking voice for Northern Ontario.”

Spacek said the group is also pleased with the appointment of Michael Gravelle as Minister of Natural Resources.

“In the past few years this ministry, which is tightly intertwined with the North, was led by a non-Northerner so we welcome Michael Gravelle to this critical portfolio and look forward to working with him in this new role,” Spacek said.

FONOM applauds Premier Dalton McGuinty for his smaller cabinet and Spacek said it “will be requesting face-to-face meetings with select ministers in the near future at which time we will present them with a detailed document of Northeastern Ontario issues and priorities for the coming few years.”

FONOM’s membership is made up of 110 municipalities, towns and cities in northeastern Ontario and acts in an advocacy role in relation to political and economic issues of concern in the North.
