The two First Nation communities have formed a partnership with Toronto investment banker, Morgan Geare for a transmission line in northwestern Ontario.
Mishkeegogamang First Nation and the Ojibway Nation of Saugeen First Nation announced Sept. 23 the formation of an energy infrastructure joint venture.
Sagatay Transmission LP was formed to plan and develop a new 230 kV line from Ignace to Pickle Lake. The route runs from Highway 599 from Ignace north to Pickle Lake.
It's considered a priority project in the Ontario government's energy plan.
The $230 million, 300 kilometre-long line is the first of a two-phase project and will provide power to remote communities and will replace diesel-fired community power generation.
The project is situated close to the Ring of Fire chromite deposits in the James Bay lowlands.
“This project will cut through the heart of our traditional territory, and so we are extremely pleased to be in a position to work to minimize its impact, while optimizing the benefits of our people,” said Chief Edward Machimity of Saugeen First Nation.
The partnership is expected to deliver training and employment opportunities for community residents and provide a revenue stream.
