The Laurentian School of Architecture in Sudbury has selected Toronto-based firm Levitt Goodman Architects Ltd. to design the school, which will be located in downtown Sudbury.

The firm, which has been in operation since 1989, boasts a client list including major urban centres such as Toronto, Kitchener, St. Catharines and Mississauga, and has worked on projects for the community, cultural, educational, residential and commercial sectors.

Levitt Goodman has previous experience designing a school of architecture. In 2004, it successfully transformed a 100-year-old Cambridge silk mill into the School of Architecture at Riverside at the University of Waterloo. The 85,000-square-foot structure spans three storeys and is comprised of steel and wood with mill deck flooring.

It is anticipated the firm will begin on plans for the school immediately, although a final decision on the location of the school has yet to be made.

The preferred Elgin St. location has been cause for controversy, as it is currently the home of Market Square, the city's seasonal farmers' market.

City council is expected to make a decision on whether to sell the property to the architecture committee—and the future of the market—this fall.

The school is aiming to welcome the first cohort of students in 2013.
