FedNor Minister Tony Clement made the financial rounds across the region in October delivering federal economic development dollars.
The North Claybelt Community Futures Development Corporation in Kapuskasing and Hearst's Hearst's Nord-Aski Regional Economic Development Corporation each received $960,000 to run its small business support programs.
In Sudbury, FedNor's Northern Development Program will use $27,500 to hire a youth intern for the City of Greater Sudbury to work as a junior busines officer with responsibilities to educate young people and young professionals in the area of entrepreneurship.
Waubetek Business Development Corporation on Birch Island in the Manitoulin area landed more than a $1 million to provide small- and medium-sized business support and to hire a youth intern and a project coordinator.
The North Bay-based WoodWORKS! arm of the Canadian Wood Council received $600,000 for a two-year initiative to promote the use of wood in commercial applications. A further $58,575 is earmarked for the City of North Bay to develop a sports tourism strategy to help attract major events to the community.
Thunder Bay Metal Fabricators Association landed a $195,000 cheque to hire experts in the oil and gas, mining and nuclear sectors, as well as a production standards and safety consultant. FedNor said these advisors will identify new business opportunities and help grow local companies.
Clement also made a pit stop in his Parry Sound-Muskoka riding to deliver $20,000 to Cranberry Products of Canada to hire a youth intern to devise a strategic plan for the company in exploring international markets for its fruit wines.
