Sachigo First Nation is receiving $490,000 from FedNor to build a small business centre in the remote northwestern Ontario community.
"Today’s (Nov. 21) announcement will provide the Sachigo Lake First Nation with the infrastructure it needs to attract new investment to the area and enable existing businesses to grow and prosper," said Tony Clement, minister for FedNor. "It will also help position the community as a base of operations for the region’s mining sector and assist in pursuing opportunities in the tourism, forestry, energy and service sectors."
The community is 450 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout. The new centre will act as incubation space for entrepreneurs and provide room for businesses and community organizations.
"By working with First Nation communities to address their economic and business development priorities, our government is helping to strengthen and develop the local economy," said Kenora MP Greg Rickford.
"More importantly, this initiative will empower Sachigo Lake First Nation to take charge of its future."
"With financial support from FedNor, Sachigo Lake First Nation will have the type of strategic infrastructure required to create employment opportunities and business partnerships with the private sector," stated Chief Titus Tait.
