From small business to youth initiatives, 16 projects in the Greater Sudbury region have seen a total of $975,000 through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program.
This includes $578,000 spread across community economic development initiatives, such as $122,500 for the City of Greater Sudbury to develop a vision, plan and action strategy to guide downtown development for the next 10 years.
Funding of $121,337 was also provided to Grassroots Economic Opportunity Development & Evaluation (GEODE) for its Stepping Stone Entrepreneurship Program. This is designed to promote small and home-based businesses by providing them with development training and access to small business loans.
Ontario's North Economic Development Corporation also received $60,000 to complete an in-depth study of the mining supply and service sector and its economic impact.
In the category of small business initiatives, the City of Greater Sudbury received $184,200 to help its Regional Business Centre to provide business counselling and support services to regional clients.
FedNor also provided $219,176 to fund employment for eight new graduates through its Youth Internship Program, with each host organization receiving up to $27,500.
