Adam Vallee and David Kochanowski, emergency response officers with Essar Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie, have qualified for a national fitness championship.
During the Scott Firefit Championship in Dorchester on July 2, the pair won the award for Best Rookie Team and placed sixth overall.
A world-class national fitness competition, Scott Firefit challenges emergency services professionals to exceed their own limits of technical fitness, combining extreme fitness challenges along with firefighting techniques.
The first event occurred in 1994 in Vancouver and increases in popularity each year, attracting competitors from as far as the United States, New Zealand and England.
“Everyone at Essar is exceptionally proud of Adam and David's results,” Essar Algoma CEO Jim Hrusovsky said in a news release. “Their demonstrated skilled knowledge and conditioning is commendable and a great example of the Essar spirit.”
Vallee and Kochanowski competed in six tasks, including stair climb with high-rise pack, hose hoist, forcible entry, run, hose advance and victim rescue.
Their standing now qualifies the duo for the national competition, which will take place in Medicine Hat, Alberta in September.
