Employment rising among men over 55: Statistics Canada

February's national employment numbers rose by 21,000 over the previous month, with men 55 and over accounting entirely for the gain, according to a report issued by Statistics Canada.

This brings Canada's unemployment rate down 0.1 percentage points to 8.2 and the unemployment rate for men 55 and over down 0.6 points to 7.1 per cent.

Women 55 and over saw little change in employment, remaining static at 5.7 per cent unemployment.

Growth sectors for employment in February included manufacturing at an added 17,000 jobs, while natural resources saw an increase of 11,000 jobs. Retail and wholesale trade saw a loss of 34,000 jobs while finance, insurance, real estate and leasing saw a loss of 22,000 jobs.

Overall employment has been on an upward trend since July 2009, with a rise in about 159,000 jobs in that time.
