Employment insurance (EI) beneficiary numbers continued to sink across Canada, according to data recently released by Statistics Canada.

The number of EI beneficiaries in Ontario rose slightly in October by 4,200, though this remains down from June.

However, the month marked a large year-over-year increase for the Greater Sudbury region, where the number of EI recipients rose from 1,600 in October 2008 to 4,000 in October 2009.

The number of initial and renewal claims nationwide was down 2.5 per cent for October, sinking by 7,000 to hit 270,300. Ontario in particular saw the biggest decline in claims, dropping by 7,400 workers or 7.9 per cent.

Men between the ages of 25 and 54 receiving regular EI benefits made up 42.9 per cent of all beneficiaries.
