Bad market conditions are being blamed for upcoming layoffs of as many as 400 employees as Essar Steel Algoma.
The Sault Ste. Marie manufacturer of plate and sheet steel is calling the layoffs only temporary as notices went out in early December.
The company posted a net loss of $39.6 million for the quarter ending Sept. 30.
Employees are expected to be recalled when markets improve.
Essar is reportedly offering a retirement incentive package to reduce the impact of the layoffs.
