Douglas Morrison, vice-president of the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) in Sudbury, will take on the new position of research chair, whose focus will be on expanding research opportunities and attracting innovation in mining.
The move was made possible through a funding grant of $823,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.'s (NOHFC) Emerging Technology Program.
Morrison will help CEMI expand its research and development activities in such areas as energy, conservation and resource management; attract projects that explore innovation in mining; and support the development of new technologies that contribute to sustainable mining operations.
The new chair will also help further strengthen Northern Ontario's standing as a region for mining innovation and research excellence, according to a news release.
"This project will provide an opportunity for academia and industry to interact in the development of innovative mining research initiatives that will foster job creation and benefit our communities for years to come,” Northern Development Minister Michael Gravelle said in the release.
